In April 2018, USAID’s Supporting Access to Justice, Fostering Equity and Peace (SAFE) Program held a series of activities to improve the quality of community-based mediation in the country.
The workshops resulted in the development of an Instructor’s Guide for Mediation Trainers, and a cadre of newly trained instructors who are equipped with essential skills to train others on community-based mediation.
The activity is a result of a partnership with Avocats Sans Frontieres (ASF); the Legal Aid Services Providers Network (LASPNET) and Justice Centres Uganda (JCU). The partners are communicating with the judiciary to promote the recognition of community-based mediation outcomes that would bolster the efficiency of the justice system and reduce forum-shopping.
USAID’s SAFE Program in Uganda is a six-year, 14 million USD program which seeks to mitigate conflict by strengthening access to justice and promoting equity and peace in 20 districts throughout Uganda.
