Kosovo, January 2012: Legal Professionals Program to bolster education

NCSC is pleased to announce the award of the Kosovo Legal Profession (KLP) Program, a three-year cooperative agreement with USAID in Kosovo. The program will work with university law faculties to enhance clinical legal education, and with the Chamber of Advocates’ to strengthen continuing legal education programs and membership services.

On October 6, The National Center for State Courts held a launch event for USAID’s Judicial Reform & Government Accountability Project, a five-year initiative to support judicial reform and good governance in Serbia, and to further enable the country’s integration in the broader European community.
South Africa, June 2011: Program Supports a Stronger Judiciary
The National Center for State Courts is implementing the Justice SEctor Strengthening Program (JSSP) in South Africa. The twenty-one month project, funded by USAID, works in partnership with key justice-sector stakeholders to support and augment reforms in two broad areas: Improved court administration and caseflow management, and the more effective prosecution and adjudication of sexual offenses cases.

Rule of Law in Honduras
NCSC and its subcontractor, Federation of Development Organizations of Honduras (FOPRIDEH), were awarded a 17-month grant from the U.S Department of State to conduct a project to improve the justice system effectiveness in Honduras.

NCSC and The Protection Project at The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) were awarded a 15-month grant from the U.S. Department of State to conduct a project to promote human rights in Egypt.

Support for Criminal Jury Trials in the Georgian Courts
The U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Department of State have engaged NCSC’s assistance to support efforts by the Republic of Georgia to implement jury trials in Tbilisi beginning October 2010. NCSC will work with Georgian judges and court administrators to develop and implement effective jury trial practices and procedures. NCSC has identified the following six critical tasks that the Georgian Courts System in Tbilisi should complete to successfully prepare for jury trials.

NCSC is partnering with the National Democratic Institute (NDI) through the Kosovo Assembly Strengthening Program (KASP) to provide legislative educational activities for the Kosovo Assembly for a three-year project which began in 2009.

Strengthening the Independence of the Judiciary
and Citizen Access to Justice in Lebanon
On March 2, 2010, Lebanese Minister of Justice Ibrahim Najjar presided over the inauguration of the renovated Beirut Judgment Enforcement Court. The renovation was funded by the United States Agency for International Development through its Project to Strengthen the Independence of the Judiciary and Access to Justice, a three-year, $8.2 million project which the National Center is implementing in Lebanon.
