Nicaragua: Engaging Communities to Prevent Gang Violence

In late 2018, NCSC conducted an initial assessment under a new Gang Violence Prevention Program in Nicaragua. The Program will strengthen civil society capacity and engage communities to prevent gang violence and improve outcomes for young people. The assessment mapped activities that could improve outcomes for at-risk youth in the departments of Managua, Masaya, and Leon, specifically in municipalities with the highest levels of violence. Surveys, focus groups, and interviews were conducted with hundreds of young people in these departments.

The Gang Violence Prevention Program is funded by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL).
