The Bahamas: NCSC Supports Creation of Public Defender’s Office
Since October 2016, NCSC has supported the creation of a Public Defender’s Office to provide legal aid services to indigent persons in The Bahamas. Two experienced U.S. Federal Public Defenders have spearheaded efforts to assist Bahamian partners in establishing and developing the necessary human resources and management structures to open the office. An initial assessment identified immediate staffing needs, defined operational start-up requirements, and provided recommendations for long-term training and support needs. The NCSC team will continue to provide onsite mentoring and technical assistance over the coming months.
NCSC’s presence in The Bahamas is made possible through the Justice Sector Assistance to the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative Program (CBSI), funded by the Department of State, Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL).
